During the PONY International Board of Directors meeting, a decision was reached to change the date for determining player eligibility from April 30 to August 31. The rule change will take effect at the start of the 2018 PONY Baseball season. This decision was reached by PONY International after careful consideration of input from leagues, parents, coaches and other sources important in the decision-making process. By making our program younger, all players will be competing on a level playing field. This change will ensure all PONY participants will play in their true age group.

PONY (Protect Our Nation’s Youth League) is the governing body for SFYBL (San Francisco Youth Baseball). SFYBL has the choice to continue being part of PONY, follow their rules and directives or separate from them. SFYBL has decided to continue being part of PONY and therefore abide by their age rules and standards. We're alerting our membership of the change, we received notification on Friday, 10/13 at 7am of the new change.

Rules of Age Qualification– Change Birth Date to August 31 (from April 30).

Why - the age cut-off will be pushed back to August to better align with school cut-off ages. This also aligns with the most school entry/grade ages plus it matches most other leagues age cut-off.

SFYBL Impact - Some current SFYBL players might lose a year in a division in 2018 and have to skip to the next higher division. Players born May 1 to August 31 will be affected. For example, those first-year Pinto players (under the April 30 cut-off) in Spring 2017, would be a first year Mustang player in Spring 2018 under the new August 31 cut-off.

SFYBL Modification - Since it does affect our eldest and final division (Pony 13U & 14U), we are extending the courtesy ONLY for 2018 season to any Pony division players that will “age out” due to this change. We will keep the age cut off as in past years. HOWEVER, this does affect players for SUMMER STAR qualification. Any player wanting to participate in 2018 Summer Stars Teams MUST use the new age cutoff of September 1 - August 31, per PONY League regulations.

SFYBL’s age brackets for the 2018 season will be as follows:

  • Shetland T-Ball (4U-6U): DOB between 9/1/2011-8/31/2014
  • Shetland Coach Pitch (5U-7U): DOB between 9/1/2010-8/31/2013
  • Pinto (7U-8U): DOB between 9/1/2009-8/31/2011
  • Mustang (9U-10U): DOB between 9/1/2007-8/31/2009
  • Bronco (11U-12U): DOB between 9/1/2005-8/31/2007
  • Pony (13U-14U): DOB between 5/1/2003-8/31/2005 *Note that players born between 5/1/2003-8/31/2003 will not be eligible to play in All-Stars.

*as in past years, players may play up 1 calendar year and NOT play down. ie: This means a player can be 8 playing in the Mustang Division but not 11 playing the Mustang Division.

Registration for the spring 2018 season will open in early-mid November. More details will be coming soon as they become available to us. Any questions, please email

We look forward to seeing your players on the field this spring!
