PONY League Baseball (The governing baseball organization for SFYBL) has adopted a new bat standard for the 2018 spring baseball season. Modified rule, SFYBL will allow use of previous year’s bats for 1 more season and will revisit the adoption of this bat standard for Spring 2019.
In conjunction with USA Baseball and its other participating national member organizations, PONY Baseball has adopted the new USA Baseball bat standard (USABat). Effective January 1, 2018, with the exception of -3 (BBCOR certified), all other 2 1/4" and 2 5/8" barrel bats with a minus factor of (-5, -7, -9, etc.), must be USABat certified with the USABat licensing stamp on the bat in order to be used for league and tournament play. All 2 1/4" and 2 5/8" minus factor bats -5, -7, -9, etc. used in 2017 will be illegal to use in 2018.
The new USA Baseball approved bats are available in stores now!
Rule 8 C 3 – 2 5/8 Bats
Effective January 1, 2018, all other minus factor bats (-5, -7, -9, etc.) must be YBBCOR Certified (USA Bat Licensing Stamp on bat).

Why: Safety. USA Baseball's national member organizations believe that a wood-like performance standard will best provide for the long-term integrity of the game. These bats are made to mimic wood bats, lessening the "pop" factor and thus, reducing the potential injuries from hard hit balls, especially come-backers to pitchers.
SFYBL Impact - All players will have to use YBBCOR or BBCOR stamped bats. Bat manufacturers should start making these bats available in 2017. Modified rule, SFYBL will allow use of previous year’s bats for 1 more season and will revisit the adoption of this bat standard for Spring 2019. SFYBL’s goal is to create the opportunity for as many players to be able to play baseball in San Francisco. We don't want to create possible financial hardship for our players, families or teams this season by mandating replacement of all bats. However, any player moving towards Summer All Stars will be required to use the new regulation bats when entering tournament/competition play from May - August.
